Gennaro’s Tomato Pie to replace Da Vinci Ristorante on E. Passyunk Ave.
UPDATE: Gennaro’s will relocate to E. Passyunk Ave. from their Jackson St. location, The Insider confirmed through owner Mike Giammarino. “We’re not big enough to take reservations and too small for larger parties,” Giammarino said. The new Gennaro’s won’t open until “mid-2015” and will be BYOB offering courtyard seating. The future of the Jackson St. location is unknown.
Original: Well, this is a little bit of a surprise. Da Vinci Ristorante at 1533 S. 11th St. is “permanently closed” according to the restaurant’s answering machine.
Gennaro’s Tomato Pie, the award-winning pizza joint located at 1429 Jackson St., has apparently taken over the building and will reopen there in the “first quarter of 2015.”
A neighbor tipped us off that a sign had been hung in the window on Monday stating that Da Vinci was closed. The restaurant is typically closed on Mondays, but this time things were different: “I saw them removing tables and chairs then cleaning the front windows and placing signs in the window advertising Gennaro’s.”
A quick call to Da Vinci confirmed that Gennaro’s is taking over the restaurant. Here’s what’s left on the answering machine:
Please be advised Da Vinci’s is now permanently closed for business. This location will reopen under new management first quarter of 2015 as the new location for Gennaro’s Tomato Pie.
While the message says it will be the new location, it’s still unclear if Gennaro’s will be moving from their Jackson St. space or if this will be their second South Philly location. We’ll certainly keep you posted as more information becomes available.
In the meantime, here’s a refresher on how to reheat their glorious pies at home.
Thanks again to a neighbor who gave us the heads up on this development. You can shoot us a tip to punk@passyunkpost.com.
gennaro’s rules!
no surprise to anyone who ever ate at DaVinci
One of my favorite bad reviews from The Inquirer, complete with a rinsed off veal chop…
http://articles.philly.com/2008-10-19/entertainment/24997807_1_perfect-meal-da-vinci-ristorante-veal
Now that is just wild…a rinsed off veal chop. As someone with life-threatening allergies myself, that would disgust me. How clueless can you get?
Hope they ditch the corkage fee. Very un-Philly for a BYO
Now this is GREAT news! Loose a crappy joint, that was occupying a prime space, and replace it with a proven winner!
Now if only Chiarrella’s would follow suit.
I am deeply saddened by the news of DaVinci closing. I had nothing but good experiences every time I had been there! Such a great place with amazing food!
@Meg, there is an Olive Garden in CC. Should be right up your ally. Maybe Provwitout will take you.
Hey I love Genarro’s… But you’re really just a bully on these comments pages man… DaVinci wasn’t that bad. Genarro’s is going to be s mich better fit. Bit you’re rediculous the way you have to shout people down all the time. Get a life.. Or find a hobby.
A much better fit***
Birra, Briggentessa, and now Gennaros on the same street – I’m gonna be 300 lbs.
Agree.. Awesome news!
Some people feel that their opinions are the only ones that count, AnthonyG you are very rude person.
@Theresa: judging by the fact that Divinci’s was always dead-empty on Fri/Sat nights, it is pretty fair to say that my opinion was shared by the vast majority. The place was crap. Read the LeBan review posted above.
Agree with you Theresa.. LoL
