First Pics: Eastern Pass Tattoo opens above Era Atomica

Eastern Pass Tattoo is now open above Era Atomica at 1835 E. Passyunk Ave.

The new tattoo shop is run by Scott Bakoss and Mike Hooligan. Both artists worked together at Kadillac Tattoo Deuce in Northeast Philly. Hooligan still works at Kadillac after more than 10 years as an artist there, but Bakoss now tattoos full time at their new spot on E. Passyunk Ave.

When deciding on a location for the shop, Bakoss says that they knew that they wanted a second floor spot. The location they decided on, above Era Atomica, is the perfect location, Bakoss says. To get to Eastern Pass, you must first walk through some mid-century modern furniture in Era Atomica to access the stairway to the tattoo shop. Although it would seem like an inconvenience to walk through an already standing business to get to, the clientele for Era Atomica is very much the demographic that would also like the stylings of tattoos from Bakoss and Hooligan. Eastern Pass will also be open the same hours as Era Atomica.

Previously the space was part of Tan Quest, so a lot of work needed to be done to get the shop into the condition it is today. When redesigning the location, Bakoss says that they wanted to go for a sleek, modern look to become a classier version of a traditional tattoo shop. While still very sleek and clean, the shop still has all of the tattoo artwork, skulls and more that give the shop character.

Bakoss and Hooligan are both from the pre-google tattoo generation, as Bakoss puts it, so they are pretty much have their bases covered as far as tattoo styling. They can work on any tattoo–from small designs to larger-scale portraits.

Being artists, I hope they get a real sign.

Talked to the owner about that today:

The sign pictured is temporary while their real sign was being manufactured. It should be down shortly.

Funny.. I forgot more about Italian food than you know. But I’m glad you’re having fun with all the chain restaurant references.
