South Philly Barbacoa set to replace Vegan Commissary at 1703 S. 11th St.
South Philly Barbacoa, the popular food cart located at 8th and Watkins, has closed up their cart and will soon be opening up shop in an East Passyunk Crossing storefront.
The new dine-in or take-out spot for South Philly Barbacoa will be in Vegan Commissary’s former location at 1703 S. 11th St.
Back in April of 2014, co-owner of the popular taco spot, Benjamin Miller, told us that once the food cart reached a certain capacity, they would have to move to a new location. Now seems like the perfect time for Barbacoa. Since they first opened the cart in 2014, their clientele has grown pretty rapidly. Craig LaBan even named their barbacoa lamb and pancita tacos as one of his favorite dishes of the year.
To accommodate for the growing demand, Miller, along with his wife and co-owner, Cristina Martinez, announced on Instagram and Facebook late last week that the last day for their food cart outside of their home at 8th and Watkins would be on June 20.
If you recall, South Philly Barbacoa was originally proposed to open in Isaiah Zagar’s warehouse.
Although the cart is now closed, you won’t be without South Philly Barbacoa for too long. According to Eater, this new location could open as early as the beginning of July.
