Friends of FDR Park look toward keeping park clean, safe in 2014

Safety and cleanliness are the top priority this year for the Friends of FDR Park, according to board members who held their annual meeting last week.

One of the board members said at the meeting on Thursday that clearing the sight lines around the park will help parkgoers feel safer. The theory is that if you can see all around, there will be no fear of what is lurking behind the bushes.

A main contributor in reaching this goal will take place May 10, on “Love Your Park Day.” The event will take place by the boathouse, at FDR Park between 9 a.m. and noon.

Organizers will be offering snacks and T-shirts to all volunteers. And do not worry, it is not BYOT (bring you own tools). The committee informed its members that they just purchased new outdoor tools for the lake-front clean-up effort.

In addition, the Friends have joined forces with the Eagles and the Phillies for a combined clean up on Earth Day, April 22. More details regarding that will be released as the date gets closer. According to the board members, the Friends of FDR Park’s mailing list is 500 people strong. However, less than 10 people attended this year’s annual meeting. Please come out to these events and check up on their website for updates and more event information.

    As far as suggestions for getting more people involved and to come there…..improve the landscaping throughout the park. Its downright shabby in some parts particularly around the lakes.

    Also, maybe some more robust programming? The park is pretty out of the way. Some excellent programming would definitely increase interest.
