Plans for former Sacred Heart school’s reuse to be presented next week
The Pennsport Civic Association will hear a presentation on Tuesday about the future of the former Sacred Heart School at 1329 E. Moyamensing Ave. (at Reed Street across from The Industry).
As we reported back in March 2013, the Christopher Columbus Charter School purchased the building with plans to add to the K-8 school. That charter operator now has locations at 13th and Wharton (grades K-5), right across from the to-be-rehabbed Columbus Square Park, and another near 9th and Christian (grades 6-8).
The school, which says on its website has more than 700 students enrolled, paid $2.8 million for the property.
One interesting thing to note is that the notice sent out about the meeting next week includes a mention of 231 Reed St., the parking lot behind the school is that is next to Herron Playground. Could that mean they plan to build an addition to the school? Just a wild, unsubstantiated guess. We’re not clear on what the plans are at this point, so we’ll have to wait for the meeting to provide more details.
The community zoning meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, June 3 at 7 p.m. at EOM, 138 Moore St.
UPDATE: Curbed Philly has a little more info, saying the school does plan to expand the footprint of its current building to make room for nearly 800 students.
