18 stations may be placed below South Street in bike share’s first phase
Eighteen bike share stations are expected to be installed in South Philly during the first phase of the system’s spring roll-out, including 10 below Washington Avenue.
Plan Philly reported that the Philly Bike Share website unveiled the locations on an interactive map and invited city residents to offer feedback on the proposed locations and suggest additional ones.
Plan Philly noted that Andrew Stober at the Mayor’s Office on Transportation and Utilities told Inga Saffron in 2013 that bike docking stations wouldn’t go on sidewalks or in parking spaces, except as a last resort.
That doesn’t leave a lot of room, including for the dots on this map, right? Maybe they’re all last resorts in South Philly, because where else would they go?
I’m excited for this, but I don’t see why they couldn’t plan any east of Passyunk Ave, south of Washington. Hopefully that comes soon after the initial rollout. Just seems weird to have several planned for Pointe Breeze and 0 planned for Pennsport, Dickinson Square areas

They’re soliciting feedback.
The plan is not final, despite the implications in this blog post.
Keep in mind that the original plan was for zero south of south. Getting any south of Washington was them listening loud and clear. Although I’d love some east, the reality is:
(A) They only have so much money
(B) clustering them around the subway lines makes sense.
(C) clustering the subways together is essential for both usability and for their re-distribution efforts.
Phase II shouldn’t be that far behind.
I’ll definitely be happy to have stations some South of South, and I agree with clustering with subways, but to place all 10 of the stations that are below Washington west of Passyunk is weird (and so is this sentence structure, admittedly) – especially with the North/South bike lanes on Columbus and Moyamensing, all the shopping along Columbus, and the lack of public transportation in that area.
(C) should read “bike stations” not subways
