Is a coffee shop for cinephiles coming 1607 S. Broad Street?
UPDATE: The answer is yes, and it will be called CineMug. More to come later.
You’ve probably noticed the newspapers pasted on the window of 1607 S. Broad Street, a sure sign that something is going on inside.
Permits show that Cinemug applied to open a movie-centric coffee shop a few doors south of the Philadelphia Gas Works office and mere steps from the Broad Street Subway. So, what kind of coffee are we talking here?
According to their Facebook Page, Cinemug will offer “a curated selection of art/cult/foreign movie rentals and locally roasted ReAnimator coffee.” It also states that they’ll be open in the spring of 2014, with the original permits issued back in April. The permit was recently updated on September 29th, so something could be in the works.
We’ve got to admit, it took a few times reading over the permit to fully understand what could be coming to the space (emphasis is ours).
PREPARED FOOD SHOP (COFFEE SHOP) AND RETAIL SALES OF CONSUMERS GOODS ( MOVIE RENTALS NOT AS DEFINED IN SECTION 14-601(6)(a) ADULT ORIENTED MERCHANDISE) ON THE GROUND FLOOR WITH FOUR RESIDENTIAL DWELLING UNITS LOCATED ON THE UPPER FLOORS. NO SIGNS AS PART OF THIS APPLICATION.
To recap, the shop will sell coffee and rent movies, although not of the naughty variety. Sorry, ya’ll. Although, we’re sort of surprised that a porno-coffee shop venture hasn’t happen yet in Philly (that we know of anyway)

Oh was hoping it would be like FilmBar in Phoenix where you can drink, eat and view
@Merilyn,
That might fall under a different use and need a variance….maybe.
