Former Gavone’s Restaurant now sports a liquor license; will be called Frida
It’s been 18 months in the making, but a liquor license has finally landed on the former Gavone’s spot at 10th and Wolf.
Is a Mexican restaurant still planned for the space that sits catty-corner to LoMo favorite Los Gallos at 951 Wolf St.? It certainly looks like it.
Plaza Girabaldi and Raul Castro, owner of Plaza Girabaldi at 935 Washington Ave., are both listed as the applicants for the liquor license.
Last April, we brought you the news that owner Raul Castro wanted to bring a Mexican restaurant concept serving “home-style Mexican food, like the way my grandma, mom, and aunts cook at home” and needed a liquor license to serve margaritas and other drinks.

UPDATE: The Insider reports this afternoon that Castro plans to call the new restaurant Frida in honor of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. He says it will be a more upscale experience than Plaza Garibaldi.
City records show that Castro purchased the property in February of 2013 for $375,000. The building sat vacant for a lengthy period of time and renovations to the property were needed. Castro stated he had hoped to have the new restaurant up and running in the fall of 2013.
A year later, we might finally be seeing Castro’s vision come to light.
Thanks to the friendly reader who tipped us off to the license via Twitter. You can follow (and send info to) Passyunk Post on twitter — @PassyunkPost!
I like that there will be a place to get a drink in the neighborhood but does this make sense to anyone? I love Los Gallos – and they are BYOB. Why not try a new type of concept?
This is awesome news. We need more upscale places in this area!
