PHS pop-up beer garden coming to 9th and Wharton this summer
Earlier this year, there was talk about two potential South Philadelphia lots that could be used for this summer’s Pennsylvania Horticultural Society pop-up beer garden.
While both the Ice House lot in the Italian Market and the 9th and Wharton lot across from Pat’s Steaks were both in consideration, the 7,800 sq. ft. lot at 9th and Wharton was chosen to be one of three locations throughout the city to be transformed into one of these pop-ups this summer.
More on the pop-up garden from PhillyMag:
The South Philadelphia location has landed at 9th and Wharton, opposite Cheesesteak Vegas. The look here will be an urban garden with a “hipster vibe.” Look for recycled bike parts and reclaimed wood. A splash of color provided by a wave of Gomphrena Fireworks will spice up the beer garden. The spot will offer bean-baggy furnishings and a return of the popular stepped stadium seating that was so popular on Broad Street in 2013. Food and drink will be provided by Royal Tavern and Cantina Los Caballitos and will also borrow from the Italian flavors of the neighborhood.
In case you’re wondering, this is the same 9th and Wharton lot that has been a hot-topic lately with a multi-use building with retail and apartments being planned for the location.
The other two pop-ups this summer will be the South Street beer garden at 1438 South St. and in the courtyard of Three Logan Square.
The PHS pop-up gardens should be open sometime in early June.
What do you think of these pop-up garden locations?
Couple of questions/comments:
1. It seems the “Phillymag” link is broken.
2. Isn’t this the same lot as the 9th and Wharton development proposal? The one that has gotten so much attention this month:

If so, does this impact the progress of any of those plans? I imagine it wouldn’t, but it is a bit strange if it’s the same exact lot.
No impact on progress. Not sure if/when the ZBA hearing is, plus, even if they had approvals, its doutbful that they have construction docs……so, lets enjoy the summer on this lot!
Looks like construction of the garden has already started at 9th and Wharton. The wooden beams bordering it are out and some new stone borders are going in. Glad to see this turning into something other than a trash filled overgrown lot. Maybe they could bring Isaiah Zagar in to cover up that ugly mural?
