Sale of the Bok School finalized, redevelopment project moving forward

Plans to transform the former Bok technical school at 1901 S. 9th St. into a huge mixed-use facility are continuing to move forward. 

The project’s developer, Lindsey Scannapieco and her company, Scout Ltd., now officially own the property for $1.75 million.

The plans for this massive, 8-story, 340,000 sq. ft. space include retail and makers spaces for businesses and individuals. At a meeting earlier this year, Scannapieco gave examples of businesses including things like a digital agency, caterer, coffee roaster and café, craft brewery, textile artist, an accredited university, urban farms and more. Since the facility has things like kitchens and science labs, Scannapieco hopes to find tenants to utilize those spaces.

This facility also hopes to bring together the community. A few months ago, the project received a Knight Foundation grant for $146,960 to remake the grounds around the Bok into a “South Philly Stoop.” Planned improvements include things like a new bus shelter, dog park, bike repair station and more. The roof terraces of the massive building will also be open for community use.

Now that Scannapieco owns the property, the first phase of the construction project is expected to begin in January 2016, with a focus on the ground floor’s tenants.
