Snyder Avenue ShopRite moving to Pathmark’s location in Whitman Plaza
A few months ago we told you about A&P filing for bankruptcy, which at the time was only affecting one South Philly grocery store, the SuperFresh on Columbus Boulevard. Later the Pathmark at 330 Oregon Ave. was added to the list of stores closing.
Because of Pathmark’s closing, the ShopRite grocery store at 29 Snyder Ave. has decided to move into Pathmark’s location, just 1.5 miles away from their current store.
This new, bigger location for ShopRite will include an in-store cafe and seating area, an expanded area for ShopRite From Home for pick-up and delivery, an in-store dietician, an expanded catering area, larger training and break rooms, more retail space and a larger parking lot.
This move could happen as early as the spring of 2016.
Awesome! Snyder Plaza is horrible.
I heard a hot rumor that the ShopRite on Snyder will then be replaced by a Wegman’s. Can anyone confirm?
@Philly Ray: it’s been confirmed. Wegman’s at Snyder Plaza is a go!
Confirmed by who?
http://philadelight.com/news/wegmans-opening-in-south-philly-close/
I’m seeing recent articles that it’s not happening (making me sad)
@lou Whitman is worse than Snyder!!
No, the parking lot at the old Pathmark can actually accommodate more than 24 cars. Though, yes, the rest of “shopping” experience blows.
What is going into the old Shop Rite building?
I LOVE the Shop Rite on Snyder. The employees are So friendly and helpful, and the music! Customers walk down the isles singing to the oldies. Lets hope it continues on Oregon Avenue. The parking will greatly improve.
so 2 big vacancies on delaware ave. Shoprite and Superfresh. Keep us posted on what’s going to replace them!
That sucks. I liked the close cluster of Shop Rite, Target and Ikea. I can get most of my shopping for the week done in an afternoon.
You have the wrong ShopRite – the one near Target isn’t the one that’s moving
Were you told something different? The letter says 29 Snyder Ave.
That Shop Rite is the one moving. Announced on Monday.
I read they are planning some big developments in Whitman Plaza at Snyder ave and will be opening new businesses to attract residents and skilled or technical employees. Notice all the new local job postings for college adults and graduates. Guess it makes sense to make good use of all the space.
Know any specifics? Send us an email with what you’ve heard, and we can try to find out more.
@Zachary I agree!
There is plenty of parking at the current location, plenty of spots in front of Modell’s. It just requires you to walk an additional 50 feet.
While I love that shoprite, I don’t see myself trekking further south to Oregon to grocery shop. I suppose this just means that acme will get that much more of my busin.
Super Fresh employees were told a Home Goods was moving in and I have read that a Fresh Grocerer was going in the Shop Rite location. It is also owned by the Wakefern Corp so that makes sense. We will see.
As someone w/NO Car, a family, and 7 animals to shop for I CAN’T Wait for this move!! Having the bus pick you up RIGHT AT THE STORE is going to be WONDERFUL!! Will even shop there MORE NOW!! ONLY went to Pathmark when I was unable to walk or get a ride to Shoprite.
AND this is going to create MORE Jobs for South Philly! Win/Win situation here!!
So instead of 3 supermarkets in the area.. We now have 1??? SMART! How long b4 Wegman opens??
Hmm. Wegman’s model doesn’t usually fit “city” settings. As far as I know all Wegnan’s are suburban, located in very large shopping centers (that include major big box stores) or attached to malls.
Wegman’s has confirmed it is opening a store in Snyder Plaza. A Trader Joe’s is moving into the old SuperFresh.
Can you provide links for this information? I just checked the websites of both stores without luck. No indications on either site of their opening stores in South Philadelphia. there
You’re trolling pretty hard there, Lou. I would say at 100x the normal rate.
That’s his MO, he’s like the new ProvWithout
@davefame: you probably ride a bike, don’t ya?
Where did you hear a confirmation? I need a supermarket to move there because I’m a cake vendor that’s loosing the shoprite when it relocates.
Lou, confirm where you are getting these facts? Mary from church? Makes no sense. Wegmans and trader joes are to high class for s philly. Nothing against the area. I live there. Just no money to support them in walking distance.
Thinking of the center city population.Totally agree with you.Sad to say they don’t have the S. Philly population in mind. There is a method to their madness.I’m from S. Philly, too.
Wegmans is way too big to move to Snyder plaza. Home goods would be awesome.
It’s going to be a smaller urban-scale test store.
Wegman’s and Trader Joe’s are considered high end. Would not be surprised if they both open along Columbus Blvd. Catering to the Center City population.
Is wegmans definitely confirmed for Snyder plaza? I’m searching every website and nothing confirmed.
