Pennsport named as neighborhood of the year
Pennsport, the neighborhood from Washington to Snyder and from the river to 4th Street has been gaining steam for years.
This ever-growing and changing neighborhood is now receiving recognition as the “neighborhood of the year” from Curbed Philly.
Curbed’s description of Pennsport:
One of the oldest areas in Philly—and home of the Mummers—South Philly’s Pennsport is quickly rising. Located along the burgeoning Delaware River Waterfront, the neighborhood has quick access to both Washington Avenue Pier and Pier 68, the city’s newest pier park that opened in September. Also of note: Its emerging restaurant scene and the ongoing demo and development at the former Mt. Sinai Hospital, which will include 95 new townhouse and four rain gardens.
Throughout this Curbed Cup, which allowed the community to vote for their favorite neighborhood in different daily brackets, Pennsport managed to beat out other South Philly neighborhoods including East Passyunk and Point Breeze, along with neighborhoods elsewhere in the city, including University City and Kensington.
In the final round, Pennsport beat Kensington with 330 additional votes. Good going, Pennsporters.
So what’s on the horizon for the neighborhood? As Curbed mentioned, there’s the changes coming to the Mt. Sinai site, but also plenty more with new food options coming soon with The Wild Burrito and Neon Lobster on the Pennsport/Whitman border, along with the potential for a dog run at Dickinson Square Park.
Great to see a diverse selection of neighborhoods in the line-up, but what exactly is the criteria that people are voting on? And how does Kensington make for a better neighborhood than East Passyunk? It’s certainly more affordable and there are some great people, but not exactly a sober comparison…
It’s a shame their article linked to Fourth and Cross, which is now closed. So many other great options in the neighborhood!
No no! That was only temporary! Owner closed for a couple weeks to revamp and refocus… So no Brunch for a little while still (to resume in Spring), but they’re now open again for dinner with a new and improved menu!

No it’s definitely closed. The owner put out a statement maybe a week ago. He was seeking new employment for his employees.
