Order it wit kelp granules: Pat’s steaks starts a guest chef series

Instead of your normal cheesesteak from Pat’s wit or wit-out onions, today you can order a “cheesesteak” wit kelp granules, broccoli rabe and Muenster cheese. Sounds a little odd from Pat’s, doesn’t it?

The 85-year-old establishment is launching the first installment of a new guest chef series on Thursday, January 7 where you’ll have the chance to try a vegetarian cheesesteak–something most of us never expected to see at Pat’s.

A Philadelphia-based health coach by the name of Sally Eisenberg will be joining Pat’s owner, Frank Olivieri, in creating this vegetarian creation.

So what exactly is on this vegetarian “cheesesteak”? There will be sautéed broccoli rabe, avocado, red onion, cilantro, mango, kelp granules, lime juice and Muenster cheese topped with a farm fresh egg and tucked into an Aversa’s Bakery roll. Definitely not your normal, greasy Pat’s cheesesteak.

This first installment of the guest chef series will be a fundraiser for the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition in memory of Eisenberg’s sister, Clarabeth Grossman. These specialty sandwiches are pay-what-you-wish, with all of the donations being matched by Olivieri and donated to the organization.

Stop by Pat’s at 1301 E. Passyunk Ave. between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Thursday, January 7 to give this vegetarian option a try.

My girlfriend and I had this, and it was… bad. The broccoli raab was barely cooked and, beyond the fact that it was a vegetarian sandwich being served at pat’s, made no sense. Salsa, avocado, muenster? Raab? Undercooked egg?

They need to turn it over to Blackbird or the POPE for the next installment.

This makes me happy. when these places do this crap to appeal to a sector that they will never appeal to, I love it when it flops. you can’t please everyone. You have lines out into the intersection every night. keep doing what you do, don’t try to fix what isn’t broken. you will never be seen as a high-brow establishment, so keep the crappy sandwiches rolling.

Next up on Jan 21 is Marc Vetri with a cheesesteak topped with mortadella, tallegio cheese, and cherry peppers. Definitely an improvement over this one.

That at least makes some sense in regards to the original project. I’m all about some gentrification, but that first “steak” was just sacrilegious.

I tried the veggie steak. It wasn’t that good, mostly because the egg wasn’t cooked. But I only paid $5 for it, and it’s a cool idea, so I hope they stick with this.
