Passyunk Square extending sidewalk sweeping program

Since the trash problem in the city isn’t going to resolve itself, some organizations are taking action with more regular cleanups, since a bill for a street cleaning program likely won’t be moving forward too quickly.

Passyunk Square Civic Association has had a sidewalk sweeping program for years now. The program is now working to extend east of 9th Street and north of Federal Street.

Starting this month, sidewalk sweeping will be happening every two weeks in these areas. As of now, this is just a pilot program, but it could be extended in the future.

The current schedule, for Monday, February 1 through Friday, February 12:

Monday, February 1:  Tasker Street from 9th to 6th Streets; and 7th Street from Tasker Street to Washington Ave.
Tuesday, February 2:  Federal Street from 9th to 6th Streets; and 8th Street from Washington Ave. to Tasker Street.
Wednesday, February 3:  Wharton Street from 9th to 6th Streets; and 6th Street from Washington Ave. to Tasker Street.
Thursday, February 4: Start small east-west streets between 9th to 6th Streets from Dickinson Street to Tasker Street.
Friday, February 5:  Complete small east-west streets.
Monday, February 8:  Ellsworth Street from Broad Street to 8th Street.
Tuesday, February 9:  Start 13th, 12th, 11th, 10th, and 9th from Federal Street to Washington Avenue.
Wednesday, February 10:  Complete 13th, 12th, 11th, 10th, and 9th from Federal Street to Washington Avenue.
Thursday, February 11: 7th Street from Tasker Street to Washington Ave.
Friday, February 12:  8th Street from Tasker Street to Washington Ave.

Although this does mean that the sidewalks will be cleaned more frequently, PSCA is still encouraging neighbors to sweep in front of their homes once a week, and even volunteer to keep an eye on the progress on your street. These sidewalk sweepers will be dealing with ordinary litter, not large trash. If there’s any large items disposed on your street, you’re still encouraged to contact 311. If you’d like to know more, or volunteer, you can contact PSCA at trash@passyunksquare.org.

If all home owners/renters would just sweep once a week where they live we wouldn’t have such a dirty area that we call, Home!!

The problem isn’t the homeowners or businesses (although there is definitely some of that as well). I live on 9th just south of MOrris and frequently sweep the entire block…..the bigger issue is that I see people just walking down the street constantly throwing the garbage on the sidewalk. They don’t live on the block and are just passing through. It’s a constant battle.

I don’t have time or motivation to keep the *inside* of my house swept once a week, let alone the sidewalk and the street!
