Columbus Boulevard gets new name in honor of Easy Company’s Guarnere and Heffron
Over the past year, two local World War II veterans who served in the Easy Company depicted on HBO’s Band of Brothers have been given new memorials in South Philly. Edward “Babe” Heffron was given a bronze statue in his home neighborhood of Pennsport, while Bill Guarnere was honored with the renaming of the 2200 block of Winton St. as “Wild Bill Way.”
Now the two late war veterans will be honored together with a stretch of Columbus Boulevard being renamed in their honor.
The portion of Columbus Boulevard from Washington Avenue to Oregon Avenue will now be the William J. Guarnere and Edward Babe Heffron Memorial Boulevard. While the name is very long, it is a nice tribute to the South Philly veterans.
The unveiling of the new name is happening on Thursday, June 2.
Put a statue of them at City Hall. But, it’s still DELAWARE AVE.
Exactly. “Columbus Blvd” is a joke joke joke!!! If you’re really from Philly, you call it Delaware Ave…
Enough with the confusion. Deleware Ave. it is.
