Hawthorne Park kicks off its summer season with free jazz show tomorrow night
Hawthorne Park, the newish green oasis at 12th and Catharine streets, is hosting a series of free events this summer, starting tomorrow night, May 15, with a monthly jazz show.
The Friends of Hawthorne Park and Hawthorne Empowerment Coalition are sponsoring jazz shows every third Thursday through August at 7 p.m. Tomorrow is the Edgardo Cintron Quartet. And if you can’t make it, you can try again June 19 for the Denis DiBlasio Band, July 17 for the Duane Eubanks Quartet and Aug. 21 for the Diane Monroe Quartet.
Family movie nights will also be held in Hawthorne Park, sponsored by Dranoff Properties (which owns 777 S. Broad, a couple blocks away), on the final Friday of each month, starting at dark (8:30ish). Due to restrictions in the licensing agreement, they’re not allowed to say which movies they’ll show, but they can give hints. On May 30, there will be a movie with a bunch of Muppets and Tina Fey, a fish one might call Nemo (the lineup was adjusted), June 27 looks like some kind of freezing Disney flick, and July 25 will feature CGI toys made in Denmark that you can snap together.
Also look out for live reggae on Aug. 16 and further down the line, Shakespeare’s MacBeth performed by Revolution Shakespeare on Oct. 3-5, 8-12.
