As new stuff arrives on Fabric Row, 2 more fabric stores are set to close

As Fabric Row is being prepared for the future with more restaurants, boutiques and even a cat cafe, some of the old is starting to leave the street.

A couple more fabric stores are closing, leaving two more vacant storefronts on this prime street.

Fabrics on Fourth closed recently at 801 S. 4th St. after a few months of closing sales.

The other soon-to-be vacant store is Marmelstein’s at 760 S. 4th St. Having been in business since 1919, the store is calling it quits with a retirement sale. Everything is currently 50% off.

Since the street is clearly changing to represent a new generation, what new businesses and improvements would you like to see along this stretch? Or would you rather have it stay Fabric Row?

Too bad about the fabric stores closing. I enjoyed shopping on Fabric Row when I sewed much of my clothing. When I first moved to Philadelphia there were numerous fabric and notion shops bother on Fabric Row and in the vicinity of 13th and Walnut. These days it’s difficult to find a shop selling thread, buttons, etc unless one makes the trek to Walmart.
