That news story about the refineries by girard estates causing health problems would have me thinking twice about this propety. Its too bad cause its a beautiful house.
Girard Estates is a quiet gem, why isnt it more popular? This neighborhood looks like it could have easily been transplanted from Swarthmore, Lower Merion, or New Hope. The homes are beautiful stone, 100 year old, houses with backyards, driveways and tree lined streets. I wish sites like Passyunk Post, Curbed- Philly, and Naked Philly etc focused more on Girard Estates.
The refineries have been around since the Civil War. Nothing new.
I have been living in GE for 40 years. It is a great neighborhood. I chose to live here even after moving out of my parents house instead of fleeing to NJ like so many others. So called East Passyunk is nice place to visit to dine, but the homes are a tad small.
Again, as far as the refineries, if you think something bad is coming from, I doubt whatever it is stops at Broad Street. I’m sure the wind carries whatever to the Delaware across Passyunk and Pennsport and even Rittenhouse Sq.
If the refineries are a problem, I suggest moving to the midwest.
I would prefer to take my chances with the occasional wind direction, rather than undocumented landfills, contaminated aquifers, or proposed pipelines.
Once you calculate the odds, homes in Girard Estates seem more attractive.
I’ve always thought of Girard Estates as one of the most charming and pleasant neighborhoods in the city.
