Easy Company’s “Babe” Heffron memorial statue to be unveiled on September 17

Earlier this year we told you about the memorial statue of Edward “Babe” Heffron, a local World War II veteran and member of the Easy Company depicted on the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers, that would be placed on the northwest corner of 2nd and Reed at Herron Park.

Heffron, who grew up in Pennsport, passed away in 2013 at the age of 90. Now his memory will live on for years more with a bronze statue of him being unveiled at a block party celebration on Thursday, September 17.

The statue of Heffron was completed by Terry Jones, who is known for his historical sculptures and memorials.

In his latest work, “Babe is a 20-year-old soldier in uniform and getting ready to ship out,” said Jones, who is working on the figure – standing 5-foot-7 – at his Newtown Square studio. “This could be his last time at home.

“He’s standing with one foot on South Philly steps with a wrought-iron railing, and he’s looking out at the viewer,” he said. “People will be able to walk up to him and put their arm around him.”

To celebrate the life and achievements of Heffron, you can attend a block party from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at 2nd and Reed. The event will include entertainment from a USO show troupe, mummers and a DJ. There will also be food trucks at the event.

The statue itself will be unveiled at 6:30 p.m., so come out, enjoy the entertainment and help memorialize Heffron’s life in the place he called home.
